Jenkins Signs, Wrapping Up Draft Class in May

Third round pick NT John Jenkins has signed his rookie deal as he and a host of other rookies and free agents reported to Metairie for the Saints' rookie minicamp.

Like all draft picks, Jenkins got a four-year slotted contract from the Saints.

Jenkins is the last of the Saints' five draft picks to sign, ending a trend of the Saints' classically signing their draft picks as training camp approached in late July. With the new CBA signed by the league and the players' union in 2011, the drama has been removed from the process of signing draft picks.

In the past 15 offseasons, the only first draft picks that reported on time for Saints training camp are Ricky Williams and Robert Meachem. Most recently in 2011, DE Cameron Jordan missed five days of training camp practices while waiting for his rookie contract. The Saints signed all their 2012 draft picks on time, though they did not have a first or second round pick. The Saints' top 2012 pick, third rounder Akiem Hicks, signed at the end of June 2012.

Not since Ricky Williams - the entire Saints 1999 draft class - have the Saints signed their entire draft as early as May. Williams signed on May 15, 1999.
